Stewed, creamy carrots with peas / Duszona, kremowa marchewka z groszkiem

Carrots and peas form a nutritionally dense pairing, offering a wide range of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that complement each other well.

Key Health Benefits

  • Vision and Eye Health: Carrots are exceptionally rich in beta-carotene, which the body converts into vitamin A. This nutrient is essential for maintaining healthy night vision, protecting the surface of the eye, and reducing the risk of age-related macular degeneration.

  • Digestive Health and Blood Sugar Control: Both vegetables are excellent sources of dietary fiber. The fiber in carrots and peas promotes healthy digestion, prevents constipation, and slows down digestion, which helps prevent sharp spikes in blood sugar levels after a meal.

  • Immune Support: The combination provides a strong boost to the immune system. Carrots contribute vitamin A, while green peas are a great source of vitamin C and vitamin E, all of which act as antioxidants to help protect cells from oxidative stress and support immune function.

  • Plant-Based Protein and Energy: Unlike many other vegetables, green peas are relatively high in plant-based protein and complex carbohydrates, making them great for sustained energy and muscle maintenance.

  • Heart Health: Peas contain heart-healthy minerals like magnesium, potassium, and calcium, while the soluble fiber in both carrots and peas can help maintain healthy cholesterol levels.

Stewed carrots and peas—known in Polish as marchewka z groszkiem—is a classic, highly popular traditional side dish in Poland.

In Poland, marchewka z groszkiem is traditionally served as a side dish during the main midday dinner, which is the largest and most important meal of the day for many Polish families.

Specific occasions and contexts when Poles eat it include:

  • Sunday Dinners: It frequently accompanies traditional Sunday roasts or poultry dishes, served alongside roasted or boiled potatoes and meat such as pork chops (schabowy) or chicken cutlets.

  • Everyday Dinners: It is a regular weeknight staple because it is quick to prepare and pairs easily with a wide variety of proteins.

  • School and Work Canteens & Milk Bars: It is a permanent fixture on the menus of traditional Polish cafeterias and bary mleczne (milk bars), where it is served as a comforting, homestyle vegetable side.

Ingredients

  • 500 grams raw carrots washed
  • 500 grams frozen sweet peas
  • 500 ml's water
  • 2 tablespoons sugar to your desired sweetness
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1-2 tablespoons all purpose flour or corn starch for thickening the sauce
  • 3-4 tablespoons butter

Instructions

  • Peel the carrot and cut it into small, relatively even cubes as much as possible.
  • In a larger pot place the water, add salt, sugar and butter. Bring to boil.
  • Once the water boils place the cut up carrot and frozen sweet peas. (Peas I had wasn't pre-cooked).
  • Once the water and vegetables come to boil reduce heat to low and simmer until desired tenderness. About 10-20 minutes.
  • When the vegetables are tender add the flour or corn starch to reach the desired consistency. Taste and adjust the seasonings to taste.
  • Pasteurize your jars in water with cloth on the bottom about 10 minutes. After that time remove jars from the water let them cool off. Make sure the lids are sucked in. Place the jars in a cool dry place. They are good for a year or they remain safe to eat indefinitely as long as the seal on the jar remains unbroken.
