White Cabbage with Peas / Biala Kapusta z Grochem

Tasty sweet cabbage with peas is an excellent addition to any dinner served any time but is a must for Christmas Eve.

Ingredients

  • 1 kg white cabbage
  • 400 g yellow peas
  • 2 onions
  • 2-3 bay leaves
  • 3-4 grains allspice
  • 1 salt to taste
  • 1 pepper to taste
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • 1 tsp marjoram (optional)

Instructions

  • Soak peas in water overnight. The next day place the peas in the pot of fresh, salted water and simmer until soft. Peas cooks relatively quickly, you should check it from time to time to see if it is soft. If necessary, add more water to the pot. 
  • Shred the cabbage and place it in a large pot. Add bay leaves, allspice, and water to cover 3/4 of the cabbage height.  Cover the pot with a lid and cook the cabbage until tender, approximately 45 min - 1 hour, mixing occasionally.
  • Warm up the oil in a pan, add chopped onions and fry until golden brown. When cabbage is tender add onions.
  • When peas is tender, strain and mix it in with the cabbage and onions. Season the cabbage with salt and black pepper, marjoram (optional) cook for about 4-5 minutes. Serve as an addition to meat and dinner dishes. The cabbage is even tastier the next day. Enjoy!
