Cabbage Stewed with Carrots / Kapusta Zasmażana z Marchewką
Stewed cabbage with carrots is very tasty and has a delicate taste. It is an excellent addition to dinner. Young cabbage is more delicate in taste than classic white cabbage, it is usually smaller and is cooked faster.

Ingredients
- 1 medium head of cabbage ( 2 heads if young)
- 1 onion
- 2 carrots
- 1 tbsp butter
- 1-2 bay leaves
- 3 grains allspice
- 4 grains peppercorns
- 400-500 ml water
- 1-2 tbsp lemon juice
- 2 tbsp all purpose flour
- 1 tbsp sugar to taste
- 1 pinch salt to taste
- 1 cube vegetable bullion (optional)
Instructions
- Wash and chop the cabbage. Cut the onion into small cubes. Peel and grate carrots on a coarse grater or cut into cubes. Melt the butter in a saucepan, fry the onion first, then add carrots and the cabbage. Fry several minutes, stirring frequently.
- Pour water just enough to cover the cabbage. Add allspice, peppercorns and bay leaf. Add the bullion cube (optional). Simmer over low heat until the cabbage is tender.
- Thicken cabbage with flour by making a roux. Season the cabbage to taste with salt, pepper, sugar and lemon juice.
- It tastes best when it's sweet. Serve as an addition to both meat, fish and vegetarian dishes. Young cabbage stewed with carrots also tastes great as a main course with potatoes.
