Ingredients
- 500 grams ground beef ( or pork, pork-beef or turkey)
- 1 small yellow onion (grate on fine grater)
- 1-2 cloves of garlic (minced)
- 1 medium egg
- 1 cup plain bread crumbs
- 1/2 cup milk (to soak breadcrumbs)
- 1 teaspoon Vegeta seasoning (or preferred seasoned salt)
- 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
Mushroom Gravy
- 350 grams champignons or other mushrooms
- 1 small onion (diced)
- 1 mushroom bouillon cube ( I used Knorr)
- 1 tablespoon butter or oil
- 1 bay leaf (optional)
- 2 grains allspice (optional)
- 2 tablespoons all purpose flour
- 1 pinch ground nutmeg (optional)
- 500 milliliters water
- 1 pinch salt to taste
- 1 pinch black pepper to taste
Instructions
- Place bread crumbs in a mixing bowl.
- Add the 1/2 cup of milk to the bread crumbs and soak for approximately 5 minutes.
- After 5 minutes the bread crumbs will have absorbed the milk.
- Add the minced garlic and grated onion and mix well together.
- Add ground beef, egg, seasoned salt, and ground pepper.
- Mix all well but do not over mix.
- Form into small balls. I weight them all by using a kitchen scale so each ball weighs about 30 grams.
- This ensures that they will all look the same and cook at the same time. I place them on a platter and set aside to make the gravy.
Mushroom Gravy
- Place a tablespoon of butter or oil onto a pan. Add cut up mushrooms and onions and fry together until all water evaporates.
- Add water, bay leaf, allspice, nutmeg, bouillon cube, salt and pepper to the mushrooms. Bring the gravy to boil.
- Gently place the meat balls in to the gravy and bring to boil again. let the meatballs simmer on one side for about 3 minutes.
- Turn the meat balls over and let them simmer again on the other side for about 3 minutes.
- In a cup mix the flour with a few tablespoons of the gravy, making sure there are no lumps. Pour the flour mixture by tablespoons in to the gravy until it reaches the desired consistency. Serve with potatoes and favorite salad. Enjoy your meal!
